Making Connections with The King's University College

The Kings College Psychology 352 class partnered with Emmanuel Home for the Spring Semester of 2011. This  partnership allowed real life experiences to teach the Psychology of Aging to approximately 35 students.

Students visited Emmanuel Home to participate in many recreational activities over a two month period, including Keep Fit (exercise group), Knitting Club, Morning Devotions, Londonderry Shopping, Rummicub, and Chess. Many students also assisted in making our Family Fun Day (held on the Family Day long weekend) a success.  These activities were enjoyed by the students and our residents and allowed relationships to grow in a safe environment.
Here's what some students offered on their visits and experiences with our residents:
I really enjoyed my time at Emmanuel Home. The environment is so relaxed and all the staff and residents are so friendly. There always seemed to be something fun going on, too. I played games, did Keep Fit and I learned to knit. I enjoyed the company so much and I think I benefitted more from the experience than those who live there.

I had a fantastic time this year volunteering at Emmanuel Home. Truthfully, at first, I did not know what to expect when I showed up at Emmanuel Home. I was nervous about how my time there was going to go but, in all honesty, I had a wonderful experience that not only taught me about the people that are residents there but it taught me about myself and the stories that I want to be able to share when I am an older person. Some of the stories that I was able to hear over games of chess, rummikub, and even shopping at Londonderry Mall, showed me many important things in life, such as having a faith a family, that we all need when we are growing older.

From my experience at Emmanuel Home, it was such a welcoming, comforting and enjoyable place to be! The staff were all very friendly and the seniors were a pleasure to be around.

Having worked in a number of retirement homes...I can say with confidence that Emmanuel Home has something special - the residents are friendly and energetic, the staff are caring and fun, the facilities are clean and attractive. Emmanuel Home can truly be called a top quality retirement facility as well as a lively, welcoming community.
